Alaska permit test: key facts

Minimum age for a learner permit

14 years of age or older

“If you are 14 years of age or older, you may obtain the permit which is valid for two years.” — Alaska driver handbook, page 8

How long to hold the permit (drivers under 18)

At least 6 months for applicants who are 16 or 17 years of age

“Applicants who are 16 or 17 years of age must have a valid instruction permit for at least 6 months before they can be issued a license.” — Alaska driver handbook, page 9

Supervised practice hours (drivers under 18)

At least 40 hours, including at least 10 hours in progressively challenging circumstances

“your parent, legal guardian, or employer must certify that you have had at least 40 hours of driving experience, including at least 10 hours of driving in progressively challenging circumstances, such as driving in inclement weather and nighttime driving” — Alaska driver handbook, page 9

Who must ride with a permit holder

Licensed driver at least 21 years old with one year experience for same vehicle class

If you fail the knowledge test

The following day

Vision test

At least 20/40 vision in each eye or with both eyes together
