How the questions are made

We take the Inland Navigation Rules (33 CFR Part 83), the Coast Guard equipment rules (33 CFR Part 175), the numbering and accident report rules (33 CFR Part 173) and the boating under the influence rules (33 CFR Part 95) from the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, split the text into short excerpts and write multiple-choice questions about the rules in each excerpt. A question is published only if (1) its supporting quote appears word for word in the rules, (2) numbers in the answer appear in the quote, and (3) two independent checks with the options shuffled agree that the quote proves the answer and that no other option is also correct.

This is a free study aid, not a state boater education course or card; state boating laws add their own rules, and not legal advice.
