South Dakota permit test: key facts

Minimum age for a learner permit

At least 14 years of age

“Instruction Permit (Under 18 years of age) – To obtain an Instruction Permit, you must be at least 14 years of age and pass the vision and knowledge tests.” — South Dakota driver handbook, page 8

How long to hold the permit (drivers under 18)

275 days (or 180 days with driver education)

“Minors at least 14 years of age, but less than 18 years of age, must hold the valid permit continuously for 275 days (180 days if successful completion [score of 80% or better on both written and driving portions of driver education] of an approved Department of Education driver education course) prior to upgrading the permit to a Restricted Minor’s Permit or Operator’s License.” — South Dakota driver handbook, page 8

Supervised practice hours (drivers under 18)

At least 50 hours, including 10 hours after dark

Who must ride with a permit holder

A parent/legal guardian or other adult with a valid driver’s license and at least one year of driving experience

Limits for new drivers under 18

No driving from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. unless accompanied by parent; no passengers except immediate family for first 6 months

“During the hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the minor must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is occupying the seat beside the driver. The Restricted Permit holder must drive on the Restricted Permit for a minimum of 6 months and no passengers are allowed except for immediate family or members of household for first 6 months on the Restricted Permit.” — South Dakota driver handbook, page 8
